Many years ago, early on in my career, I attended (one of many more to follow) a Special Olympics event in Verona, WI. The occasion was held at the local high school, a beautiful blue sky, and warm weather - perfect for an outdoor track meet. The Dane County Sheriffs were in full force, as they led the lighting of the torch ceremony, after doing a celebratory lap with some of the participants to start things off. This event would become a significant landmark in my life.
After the fanfare and introductions, the various competitions began, all elements of the olympic track meet were present and accounted for, including one of my favorites, the javelin toss. As I sat in the bleachers watching, the 50 meter dash was about to begin, the first footrace of the day. BAM! The "gun" sounds suddenly, signaling the start of the race.

I watched in anticipation as all the athletes took off running at the sound. About 20 meters in, it was clear that one of the competitors had gained the lead, and was headed to what appeared to be certain victory. However, everyone watched in awe, as the lead runner, the all-but guaranteed victor, slowed down just enough to let the next runner catch up to him, then extended his hand out. The surprised, would-be silver medalist, grasped his competitor's awaiting hand, just before crossing the finish line...together. Happy New Year!
